Fiona Krüger is a designer with a background in both Fine Art and Product Design. A passion for hand-made objects, tradition and craftsmanship are at the core of her work, which is why upon completion of her Masters of Advanced Studies in Design for the Luxury Industry at ECAL in Switzerland, she decided to develop her own time-piece : the SKULL watch.
Her studies in Switzerland allowed her to experience first hand the world of haute horlogerie and she was fascinated by the opportunity in watchmaking to bring together the mechanical, the hand-made and her love for pattern and intricate work.
Fiona works intuitively, responding to the materials, techniques or themes she chooses to explore. She has a keen eye for detail and collaborates with artisans and suppliers who are looking for a different, more personal and poetic approach to watch design. Fiona is able to draw on her fine art background, design training and international work experience to come up with a variety of creative solutions to suit each individual time piece. Her first watch, the SKULL, was launched in September 2013 and marks the starting point for a collection of watches centered around the synonymous themes of time and mortality.
Fiona Krüger’s watches re-interpret the theme of mortality in horlogery, drawing inspiration from the 17th century skull watch of Mary Queen of Scots, the Mexican celebration of Dia de Los Muertos and beautifully decorated skeleton movements found in today’s luxury watches. Fiona is herself from Scotland and spent 3 years living in Mexico as a child. Her own scottish heritage and experiences of living and working in various countries can be found in the aesthetics of each of her watches.
Her contemporary time pieces highlight the values of watchmaking by drawing our attention to the watch movement - the heart of any time piece which is so often hidden. With a passion for craftsmanship and tradition she develops each of her watches with a desire to highlight the skills involved in their making, resulting in highly detailed and intricate designs. Fiona works with specific artisans to create her watches, from Swiss watchmakers for the movements to local leather craftsmen for the straps. This means each element of your watch has been made by someone specifically for you.
In her statement timepiece, SKULL, the layers of the dial make up the form of a skull, mirroring the aesthetics of the movement underneath. Each watch is decorated and assembled by hand resulting in a unique timepiece rich in tradition, know how and symbolism.
