The new Navitimer American Airlines celebrates the legacy of one of the world’s most beloved brands, American Airlines. Founded in 1930 from 82 smaller airlines, American Airlines has since grown into the world’s biggest air carrier by fleet size.
ABOUT THE DESIGN
The instantly recognizable red-and-blue livery and eagle logo of American Airlines® have taken many forms over the years, from the roundel designs of the 1930s and 1940s to the slick, minimal identity developed by Italian graphics master Massimo Vignelli in 1968. Wherever these codes appear, they mean two things: a far-reaching vision and an all-American spirit.
The Navitimer American Airlines makes the most of American Airlines design credentials, riffing on the bold colors and clean lines of the 1960s and 1970s graphics. An arresting re-skin of the Navitimer B01 Chronograph 43 powered by Breitling’s in-house Breitling Manufacture Caliber 01.
It features a stainless-steel case, blue dial, red hour and minute hands, and a transparent sapphire case-back printed with the American Airlines logo. The Navitimer American Airlines is available exclusively in the United States, as a limited edition of 100 pieces: 25 with a stainlesssteel mesh strap, and 75 with a calfskin leather strap and steel tang-type buckle.
A design classic since its launch in 1952, the Navitimer was the world’s first portable flight computer, equipped with a signature slide rule and rotating bezel that helped pilots to calculate critical measurements – like wind impact, speed, and fuel consumption – on the fly. During this revolutionary era, in which early commercial pilots flew a new generation of travelers across continents, the Breitling Navitimer was always on-board, as beloved for its smart functionality as for its iconic design.
Like the Boeing 707 and Douglas DC-8, the Navitimer was an invention that embodied the spirit of this golden age in flight. It remains a reminder – in watch form – that anything is possible.
