URWERK UR-10 SpaceMeter

Measuring Time and Space

Watches measure time — the URWERK UR-10 measures both time and space. The UR-10 marks a defining moment in URWERK’s trajectory: a fusion of time and space, legacy and innovation, science and emotion. At first glance, its round dial and central hands seem foreign to URWERK’s DNA, yet they reveal a new facet of the brand’s avant-garde spirit.

An URWERK Unlike Any Other

The UR-10 belongs to URWERK’s “Special Projects” collection — the brand’s platform for radical experimentation. Unlike a chronograph or regulator, its three sub-dials track the distances Earth travels through space:

– EARTH (2 o’clock): measures the planet’s daily rotation in 10 km steps.
– SUN (4 o’clock): records Earth’s solar orbit in 1,000 km intervals.
– ORBIT (9 o’clock): combines both rotations into synchronized scales.

On the caseback, a 24-hour indicator traces Earth’s full rotation, engraved with Rotation and Revolution — one clockwise, one counterclockwise — mirroring our planet’s cosmic motion.

Martin Frei, URWERK’s Co-Founder and Art Director, explains:

“Time and space are the same reality. The UR-10 depicts our earthly condition — bound by human time, yet passengers on a planet constantly traveling through the cosmos.”

A Family Legacy

The UR-10’s origins trace back to a 19th-century planetary clock discovered by Felix Baumgartner’s father, Gérard. That clock measured Earth’s journey through space rather than hours — a poetic inspiration that evolved into the UR-10’s concept. As Felix recalls:

“It became a bridge between my father’s devotion to classical horology and URWERK’s quest for disruption.”

Technical Mastery

The UR-10 houses the new Caliber UR-10.01, developed with Vaucher Manufacture. It features 44 jewels, a 4 Hz frequency, and a 43-hour power reserve. The self-winding system integrates URWERK’s patented Dual Flow Turbines, with two propellers rotating in opposite directions to regulate rotor speed and enhance durability.

Its sandblasted titanium and steel case stands just 7.13mm high, secured with a longitudinal side screw — a minimalist yet intricate construction inspired by Gérald Genta. The dial, crafted and finished in-house, features black or gray PVD surfaces, Super-LumiNova hands, and a harmonious circular layout.

Primordial Momentum

The UR-10 redefines URWERK’s identity through three pillars: the human connection between founders, a constantly evolving design language, and pioneering horological invention. As Frei concludes:

“The UR-10 is a philosophical reflection on our place in the universe — a spirit evident in every URWERK creation.”

About URWERK

Founded in 1997 by Felix Baumgartner and Martin Frei, URWERK has redefined modern watchmaking by merging cutting-edge mechanics with bold design. Producing around 150 timepieces annually, the independent Swiss atelier operates as a true watchmaking laboratory — a space where art, science, and philosophy coexist.

The name URWERK combines “Ur,” the ancient Mesopotamian city where time was first measured, and the German “Werk,” meaning mechanism. Together, they embody the brand’s vision: the creation of the original mechanism — time, reinvented.
