The Marine collection has its origins in one of the most emblematic chapters in Breguet’s history. From the end of the 18th Century, Abraham-Louis Breguet designed his timepieces as true scientific instruments, where their precision, reliability and legibility met the demands of the time. A quest for excellence found major recognition in 1815; a year after his admission to the Bureau des Longitudes in 1814, Louis XVIII appointed Breguet the Watchmaker to the French Royal Navy. His chronometers subsequently accompanied navigators and explorers on some of the greatest expeditions of the time, including Hyacinthe de Bougainville’s voyage around the world, and Jules Dumont d’Urville’s journey to Antarctica.

Rooted in this history, the Marine collection now translates the spirit of adventure and conquest into a contemporary vision inspired by codes from the world of navigation.

The Marine 5517 and its three-hand display represents the most refined expression of the collection. The dial is adorned with a delicate hand-guilloché work in the “Quai de l’Horloge” pattern, which is named for the address on the Ile de la Cité where Abraham-Louis Breguet established his workshop and created his marine chronometers. The pattern draws inspiration from the contours of the Ile de la Cité while also evoking the movement of waves. This artisanal work is executed on a gold base, which is then treated with a layer of lacquer to produce a hue of ice blue for the white gold-cased version of the watch, black for the pink gold version, and a subtle shade of blue for the titanium version. A date aperture appears at 6 o’clock on the dial, while the gold Breguet applique resides at 12 o’clock. Just like its first marine chronometer, the new Marine 5517 features Breguet numerals and “apple” hands. The top of the seconds hand forms a “B” for the Bravo maritime flag, while the crown guard evokes the movement of waves. Seen through the sapphire caseback, the gold oscillating weight is inspired by the lines of a rudder. The timepiece measures 40mm.

The slightly larger Marine Chronographe 5527 features the same delicate hand-guilloche and lacquer dial treatment as the 5517, resulting in dials of blue with a rhodium hour ring (on the white gold edition), deep blue (on the pink gold edition), and gray with rhodium-plated hour ring (on the titanium version). In addition to the indications found on the 5517, the 5527 offers a flyback chronograph function. Its seconds are measured by a large central hand, while two counters at 3 and 9 o’clock display the chronograph minutes and the small seconds respectively. The case of the 5527 measures 42.3mm.

Each version is available on a rubber strap, whose decoration echoes the Quai de l’Horloge” guilloche on the dial, or on a bracelet that matches the metal of its case.”
