Urwerk’s UR-100V LightSpeed Ceramic Limited Edition

Urwerk’s LightSpeed does more than measure minutes: it gives form to a fundamental, universal phenomenon—the propagation of light through space.

Beyond its satellite hours and minutes, the LightSpeed incorporates a planetary display representing the eight planets of the solar system. Each position corresponds to the exact time required for sunlight to travel from the sun to that planet.

When the hour satellite leaves the minute track, its role shifts; it no longer indicates time as we usually understand it, but instead becomes a marker tracing the path of a photon across cosmic distances.

“Wearing this creation is like carrying a fragment of the universe on the wrist, a miniature vision of the cosmos scaled to human perception,” explain Martin Frei, Urwerk’s artistic director.

The lustrous white case of this new version is crafted from a new ceramic composite developed by Urwerk. A polymer matrix is finely woven with ceramic and glass fibers. The sapphire caseback reveals the mechanical watch’s automatic rotor, which features an abstract illustration of the sun. Only 15 examples will be made.

“Bringing out yet another version of an existing mechanical complication was not our aim”, says Felix Baumgartner, master-watchmaker and co-founder of URWERK. “Our watches are unique because each has been conceived as an original work. That is what makes them valuable and rare. Above all, we want to explore beyond the traditional horizons of watchmaking.” Martin Frei, chief designer and the other co-founder of URWERK, develops the aesthetic signature for each of the models. “I come from a world of total creative freedom. I’m not cast in the watchmaking mold, so i can draw my inspiration from my entire cultural heritage.”
